De BAS E-LIFTER is de beste!

Projectcontext

Gedurende een periode van 12 maanden is de BAS E-LIFTER intensief ingezet in dagelijkse inzamelrondes voor papier en PMD bij Twente Milieu. Het inzamelvoertuig was een diesel aangedreven Scania uit 2016 met Zoeller kraakpersopbouw.

De veldtest omvatte huisvuilinzameling in de regio Enschede dat wordt ingezameld via 2-wiel containers met 120 en 240 liter inhoud. De test vond plaats onder reguliere operationele omstandigheden vanaf januari 2025 tot februari 2026.

De test was gericht op validatie van prestaties, betrouwbaarheid, gebruikscomfort en ‘Total Cost of Ownership’ (TCO).

KPI-resultaten (12 maanden)

Aantal ledigingen: 200.000+
Brandstofbesparing*: 5% reductie t.o.v. hydraulische belading
Veiligheid: 100% van de gebruikers gaven aan dat het systeem veilig werkt.
Totale onderhoudskosten: 70% lager dan bij hydraulische belading; < € 1.500 per jaar;
Operationele beschikbaarheid: 95%; hoger dan bij hydraulische belading
Geluidsniveau: 50% lager dan hydraulische systemen
Gebruikersacceptatie: 100%; beladers en chauffeurs verkiezen de E-lifter boven de hydraulische belading

*De brandstofbesparing van 5% werd vooral gerealiseerd doordat het niet noodzakelijk is de verbrandingsmotor op verhoogd toerental te laten draaien voor bediening van de belading; en omdat er door de grote kiephoek minder geschud hoeft te worden.

Operationele bevindingen

Met name de stille elektrische werking en de veiligheid wordt als duidelijke kwaliteitsverbetering ervaren in dagelijkse inzet.

Chauffeursfeedback

Korte overhang verbetert manoeuvreerbaarheid van het voertuig
Beter zicht op de achterzijde van het voertuig en de belading
Meer controle in krappe stedelijke situaties

Dit draagt bij aan zowel operationele efficiëntie als verkeersveiligheid.

Reiniging en onderhoud

De volledig gesloten kapconstructie en afwezigheid van hydrauliek zorgt voor:

Snelle en eenvoudige reiniging
Minder vervuiling van componenten
Zeer beperkte onderhoudsinterventies (slechts enkele bewegende delen)
Lage onderhoudskosten

De eenvoud van het systeem vertaalt zich direct in lagere onderhoudskosten en hogere beschikbaarheid.

Conclusie

Na 200.000 ledigingen en 12 maanden praktijkvalidatie kan worden vastgesteld dat de BAS E-LIFTER:

Operationeel robuust is
Aantoonbaar kostenreducerend werkt
Geluids- en emissiebelasting sterk verlaagd
Comfort en veiligheid verhoogt
Door beladers, onderhoudsmonteurs en chauffeurs positief wordt gewaardeerd

De combinatie van 5% brandstofreductie, 70% lagere onderhoudskosten en 100% gebruikersacceptatie bevestigt dat de BAS E-LIFTER een technisch én economisch superieur alternatief vormt voor traditionele hydraulische beladingen.

De veldtest onderstreept dat de BAS E-LIFTER gereed is voor grootschalige marktimplementatie.

Elektrificatie: Waarom gemeenten & inzamelaars nu een E-lifter aanschaffen

Waarom zit de elektrificatie van vuilniswagens in een stroomversnelling? En waar moet je als overheid op letten?

1) Klimaatdoelstellingen behalen

De versnelling in de elektrificatie van vuilniswagens wordt voornamelijk gedreven door recente Europese wet- en regelgeving die gemeenten verplicht hun uitstoot te verminderen en versneld te verduurzamen. In het Klimaatakkoord van Parijs (2016) heeft de Europese Unie zich gecommitteerd aan klimaatdoelstellingen, waaronder het beperken van de opwarming van de aarde tot maximaal 2 graden Celsius.

Op verschillende bestuursniveaus — nationaal, regionaal, provinciaal en lokaal — werken ‘publieke koplopers’ zoals gemeenten en gemeentelijke bedrijven aan de opschaling van elektrificatie. In 2030 moet een aanzienlijk deel van hun wagenpark, waaronder 3.500 vuilniswagens alleen al in Nederland, uit elektrische voertuigen bestaan.

Om aan de regelgeving te voldoen, hebben gemeenten en andere partijen convenanten ondertekend, zoals Duurzame Voertuigen en Brandstoffen in de Reinigingsbranche, Zero Emissie Doelgroepenvervoer 2025, en het Schone Lucht Akkoord. Deze convenanten beschrijven hoe overheden en instanties bijdragen aan een snelle, betaalbare, en efficiënte overgang naar emissievrij vervoer.

2) Zero Emissie Milieuzones

In Nederland hebben 30 grotere gemeenten afgesproken om Zero Emissie Milieuzones in te voeren. In deze zones, die vanaf januari 2025 van kracht zijn, mogen vervuilende voertuigen die CO2 en fijnstof uitstoten niet langer rijden.

Dit betekent dat inzamelvoertuigen in deze zones uitstootvrij moeten zijn vanaf 2025, hoewel er tot 2030 voor sommige voertuigcategorieën nog uitzonderingen en vrijstellingen mogelijk zijn.

Gemeenten en inzamelaars bereiden zich hierop voor door nu al zoveel mogelijk elektrische voertuigen en werktuigen aan te schaffen.

3) Regeling Bevordering Schone Wegvoertuigen (Rbsw)

Sinds augustus 2021 is de Europese Richtlijn voor de Bevordering van Schone en Energiezuinige Wegvoertuigen (Rbsw) van kracht. Deze richtlijn, ook bekend als de Clean Vehicles Directive (CVD), stimuleert het gebruik van schone, energie-efficiënte voertuigen via publieke inkoop.

De regeling verplicht aanbestedende diensten om bij Europese aanbestedingen van wegvoertuigen, zoals vuilnisdiensten, te voldoen aan een minimumpercentage schone en emissievrije voertuigen. De verwachting is dat deze regeling de komende jaren zal leiden tot een aanzienlijke toename van het aantal emissieloze vuilniswagens.

4) Breed Besef en Bereidheid om te Verduurzamen

Er is een groeiend besef en bereidheid onder publieke en private organisaties om te investeren in duurzame technologie en logistiek.

De snel voortschrijdende elektrificatie stuwt de vraag naar elektrische oplossingen, wat weer leidt tot een toenemend aanbod van kwalitatief goede elektrische voertuigen en werktuigen zoals kranen, kraakpersen en beladingen.

5) Versnelling en vervolg

Hoewel de techniek om zwaar materieel te elektrificeren nog in de kinderschoenen staat, worden er de komende jaren veel ontwikkelingen verwacht. De huidige, beperkte maar gestaag groeiende vraag naar elektrische chassis en werktuigen voor vuilniswagens kan de transitie versnellen.

De elektrificatie van de Europese vuilniswagenvloot zal een positieve impact hebben op het milieu. Inzamelaars, burgers en dieren profiteren van schonere lucht en minder geluidsoverlast, wat bijdraagt aan een gezondere leefomgeving.

Tegen 2030 wordt verwacht dat ongeveer 50% van de nieuw bestelde vuilniswagens in Europa volledig elektrisch zal zijn of ten minste voorzien van elektrische onderdelen zoals belading, kranen en/of kraakpersen. De overheid zou er daarom goed aan doen om elektrische werktuigen toe te voegen aan de MIA / VAMIL lijst zodat er een fiscaal voordeel zit aan de aanschaf hiervan.

Voor veel vuilniswagenfabrikanten vormt de overstap naar elektrische aandrijving een uitdaging. De afgelopen eeuw is er veel geïnvesteerd in fossiel aangedreven mechaniek en hydrauliek, en de overgang naar elektrische voertuigen vereist andere vaardigheden, gereedschappen en componenten dan deze leveranciers in huis hebben.

Het is van belang dat gemeenten en inzamelaars zich niet laten afremmen door deze fabrikanten, maar juist de nieuwe aanbieders van innovatieve elektrische voer- en werktuigen een kans geven. De overheid heeft hiervoor het Startup Officers Network in leven geroepen om gemeenten te helpen bij aanschaf van nieuwe technologieën.

We commit to targeting net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 at the latest, in our production of the fully electric bin lift system - the BAS E-LIFTER.

The vision

Our owner GGI Innovations believes in “investing today for a more sustainable tomorrow”. As investors and manufacurers, we have a really important role to shape the system going forward – to steward this whole economy transition.

Local sourcing

For most parts and tasks the materials and components are sourced regionally, at suppliers that also care about the environment. Much of our plate steel and metal work is even being done on the Heuning Industrial Park. This minimises costs of transport and unnecessary emissions.

Green Energy

The BAS E-LIFTERS' manufacturing facility runs on a Green Energy contract. As well, we encourage employees to travel to/from work via bike, public transport and some drive fully electric vehicles. The idea is to use the roof of the premises to place solar panels that will supply electricity to run machinery.

Serviceability

The BAS E-LIFTER is engineered to be very serviceable. Not only can we read out logs and manage settings & software updates remotely which saves travel time & emissions; we also offer a modular build which allows engineers and service partners to quickly replace units or modules with minimal emissions.

Needless to say we'll continue our work to become a net zero producer.

The Story of BAS E-LIFTERS

Establishing BAS E-LIFTERS as a independent company happened late 2020, but preparations and discussions had been going on much longer. This is our story.

Early days

People that know me (Aart, one of two co-founders) personally have told me that I am a charismatic visionary with a big love for new innovative technologies. Since my twenties I have been involved in various tech start-ups such as developing the Outcome E-Survey System in 1999 and establishing Linde Consult in 2008, a company supplying the worlds largest Food Processing & Handling Equipment Database to global customers.

In 2016, I became involved with EcoNord, which is an Icelandic manufacturing company pioneering to develop a fully electric bin lifter. After some years things did not turn out as expected and I resigned. I also quit as a member of the Service Leadership Team at Marel, a leading food processing equipment manufacturing company. It became obvious to me that now was the right time to start my own OEM and develop the best E-lifter ever made.

The vision

Combining my knowledge of start-ups; innovative equipment design; disruptive new technologies; and extended professional network I wanted to design a robust electric bin lift system for the waste management industry, starting with a bin lifter for garbage trucks and a stand-alone e-lifter for industrial applications.

In my vision, this bin lift system would be superior to other systems in the market so operators would prize its efficiency, quality, safety and user-friendliness. As well, I wanted it to contribute to a clean and sustainable world for current and future generations. No hydraulics, low noise, low dust, few moving parts, and low total cost of ownership thanks to modular build and low maintenance costs. A modular build should enable various applications.

The 'BAS' in BAS E-LIFTERS

'Alone you can go faster, but together you go farther', a wise man said. I have always liked that mantra. So when I thought of embarking on this adventure I asked my cousin Bas van der Windt how he felt about doing this together.

Bas is a brilliant engineer and inventor. D uring the past 8 years, he built a profitable manufacturing company focusing on designing and building specialised machinery, named BAS Machinebouw. The workshop is located in the central part of The Netherlands in a modern factory space equipped with everything needed to design and build an E-lifter. If anybody could do it, it would be Bas I thought and was proven right!

Most importantly, Bas believed in the concept of an electric bin lift system. Long story short, when I pitched my vision and plan to him, Bas was on board immediately. November 2020, we visited the Chamber of Commerce and registered BAS E-LIFTERS ltd.

The rest is history. We created a first prototype, received feedback from several potential customers, made another prototype and then a third one, and then finally we had a state-of-the art E-lifter which was well received at IFAT22 and even better at IFAT24.

Our next challenge is to scale up production and deliver the A-series to the first customers and prove to the world that the BAS E-LIFTER is here to stay.

The future of Waste Collection

People often ask me how I think the future of Waste Collection will look like, and why. In this short article I share my thoughts.

Trends driving faster electrification

Let's start with the current mega trends. Current trends driving the future of the Waste Collection Industry are the Technological Trend and the Sociological Trend.

The Technological Trend recently brought us Industry 4.0 with sensors, connected devices, and big data which is now turned into knowledge on which we build new services and products. One strand of the trend is electrification of vehicles which started with trailblazer Tesla, and now -at times reluctantly- followed by major truck builders such as DAF, Mercedes, Volvo, Scania, Iveco et cetera who also happen to supply the chassis for garbage trucks.

The Sociological Trend (we all want to save our planet and stop climate change) as well as the Pandemic make electrification efforts surge: planet earth cannot afford any detours attempting to achieve cleaner fuel technologies for combustion vehicles. It is a dying industry, while electric power is coming to fruition, fast!

Protective incumbents and pushing policymakers

It is no surprise that (garbage) truck builders are a bit wary of these trends. Their business has been build up around combustion motors and hydraulics. And maintenance plans and part sales. What will happen to all those investments, knowledge, and experience when electric become the norm? The steep pace of change enforced by governments and policymakers to sharply reduce emissions doesn't give much room to adjust and adapt, so protective strategies are applied to slow things down a bit while defining new strategies and business models.

The speed of change levels the playing field and lowers market entry barriers allowing new entrants to enter & compete with new innovative waste collection solutions. This is exactly what we at BAS E-LIFTERS did, jumping into an emerging market space overlooked by existing suppliers because they focused on protecting their current solutions based on combustion motors and hydraulics, needing more time to rethink and restructure.

2030 tipping point

I believe that by 2030, hybrid and electrically powered garbage trucks will dominate the streets in densely populated areas (household waste collection) and in industrial areas (industrial waste collection). We already see a shift where key functions of Refuse Collection Vehicles such as hook cranes, compactors and bin-lift systems that were previously hydraulically powered are now successfully being electrified. Electric applications are not only more environmentally friendly, but often quieter, simpler, safer to work with, and sometimes with a lower TCO as well. Once solid state fuel cells and more powerful battery packs are available & affordable, I believe that the majority of garbage trucks will be fully electric.

What lies beyond?

What lies beyond is unknown but I do believe that major breakthroughs will be achieved in the years to come. Instead of trying to reduce fossil fuel emission rates, let's focus on generating more renewable energy and storing it sustainably so we can make it widely available via the network. And on neutralising the carbon footprint of the whole supply chain of electric equipment manufacturing.

Our aim should be to make this world a better place for the generations to come. The future of waste collection is definitely electrically powered!

Sneller emissievrij afval inzamelen? Het kan nu!

Richtlijn schone wegvoertuigen nu ook voor vuilniswagens!

In 2019 is de wijzigingsrichtlijn schone en energiezuinige wegvoertuigen (2019/1161/EU) vastgesteld, die tot doel heeft de markt voor schone en energie-efficiënte wegvoertuigen te stimuleren. Daaronder vallen nu ook de bijna 2000 vuilniswagens die in Nederland rondrijden. In dit artikel een korte uiteenzetting van de mogelijkheden die gemeenten en provincies hebben om emissievrije afvalinzameling te realiseren.

Elektrificatie - transitieperiode tot 2030

De elektrificatie van vuilniswagens is in volle gang, maar de verwachting is dat het nog tot zeker 2030 duurt voordat de meeste nieuwe vuilniswagens die op kenteken komen volledig elektrisch zijn. Dit komt doordat een vuilniswagen een levensduur heeft van 7-10 jaar. En omdat een volledig elektrische vuilniswagen (met pers en belading) nu nog boven de 400.000 EUR kost, wat ruim tweemaal duurder is dan een nieuwe diesel-aangedreven vuilniswagen met een hydraulische pers en belading.

Beginnen en doorpakken!

Gelukkig is het wel al financieel interessant om de huidige vloot vervuilende en luidruchtige diesels uit te rusten met CNG tanks (biogas); met een accupakket dat de verbrandingsmotor (deels) vervangt; en uiteraard een elektrische belading zoals bijvoorbeeld die van nieuwkomer BAS E-LIFTERS. Hun innovatieve belading draagt bij aan ongeveer 15% minder brandstofverbruik door het lage eigen gewicht (slechts 400kg) dus dat is echt interessant. Bijkomende voordelen zijn dat elektrisch (emissievrij) containers heffen & legen erg stil en veilig is voor de operators en omwonenden. Snel hiermee beginnen en doorpakken is het devies!

Leidende rol voor gemeenten en provincies

In de transitie naar emissievrije afvalinzameling spelen gemeenten en provincies een belangrijke rol. Zij willen (en moeten) zo snel mogelijk de klimaatdoelstellingen halen en daarbij hoort zeker de elektrificatie van hun wagenpark. Maar ook gecontracteerde inzamelaars zoals Suez, Renewi en Remondis achten nu de tijd rijp om te investeren in een elektrisch wagenpark. Daarom zien we momenteel een snel stijgende vraag naar elektrische beladingen (om hydraulische beladingen te vervangen) en naar ombouw van dieselmotoren naar elektromotoren. En er worden ook al tests gedaan met volledig elektrische vuilniswagens waar dan ook een elektrische pers en belading bij hoort.

Advies voor aanbestedingen

Het advies aan gemeenten en provincies is om vanaf nu in alle aanbestedingen voor vuilniswagens en/of beladingen te vragen om op zijn minst een elektrische belading. Dat scheelt namelijk al een heel stuk in lawaai en uitstoot, en is ook makkelijk te realiseren omdat de achterladers een standaard frame hebben waar zo'n E-lifter direct op kan worden gemonteerd. Hoeft er dus niet direct een hele nieuwe wagen gekocht te worden maar kan het OPEX budget slim gebruikt worden.

REDUCE CARBON FOODPRINT

The almost 137,000 refuse trucks operating in the U.S. alone burn approximately 1.2 billion gallons of diesel fuel a year, releasing almost 27 billion pounds of the greenhouse gas, CO2. Every gallon of diesel fuel they burn emits more than 22 pounds of CO2.

When using electric bin lifters:

No engine power – zero carbon footprint.
Engine remains at idle – zero additional fuel consumption.
No hydraulic fluid to leak. Safer, quieter and less stressful environment for operators and the general public.
Compliments electric and hybrid RCVs, as no hydraulics are needed to power the lift.

REDUCED FUEL CONSUMPTION

“The best energy is the one that is not generated.” For a number of reasons, reducing oil consumption is one of the highest priorities for Governments and Municipalities around the world:

Cost of energy. Price of fossile fuels is going up, while battery power price per kwH go down.
Climate change and CO2 emission are accelerating the 'electrification' of diesel-powered equipment.
Urban air quality needs to improve, and pollution levels lowered.
With an average consumption of 85 liters of diesel per 100 km driven, and over 100 km driving per day when collecting household bins, every RCV E-lifter eliminates the equivalent of three (fuel-driven) passenger cars in terms of CO2 emissions.

The BAS E-LIFTER generates up to 20% fuel savings on diesel-powered RCVs, and are instrumental for Hybrid and Electric RCVs.

The Electrifying Waste Industry

Fall 2020, Linde Consult researched the Waste Management Industry that is now rapidly electrifying their fleet of Refuse Collection Vehicles (RCV's). This article describes the high-over results about TRENDS, CHALLENGES, and FUTURE and is based on desk research and interviews with leaders in the waste management industry on supply side (garbage truck builders) and demand side (municipalities / hiring companies).

Trends

Mega trends currently impacting live on earth are Rise of Technology; Rapid Urbanization; Demographic Change; and Climate Change/Resource Scarcity. These trends not only influence the way we live, but they aslo drive electrification of the waste industry. How so? Let's take a look:

Technology. The technology to switch from fossile fuels to electricity as a power source for vehicles is now available against acceptable costs, and municipalities and hiring companies alike demand options to replace their fuel driven RCV's with Electric Trucks whenever possible, and the Hydraulic Bin Lifters with Electric ones.
Urbanization & Demographic Change. Municipalities around the world experience growing urbanization. With it comes more waste that needs to be collected in narrow city streets, recycled, and transformed into new raw materials. This can be achieved with whisper quiet electric vehicles and electric bin lifts.
Climate. Carbon emissions are still trending upward while voters protest and demand the Paris Climate Goals to be met. Electric vehicles operate with zero emissions so it's only natural that the demand side increasingly requires electric vehicles and equipment.

Challenges

The main challenge is to smoothly transition from fuel-powered RCV's with hydraulic bin lifters into a world-wide fleet of battery-powered refuse collection vehicles. We think the electrification process will run until the year 2030 and beyond, despite the strong lobby by governments (and voters). Why not quicker? A few good arguments were mentioned:

The worldwide fleet of of petrol fueled RCV's counts approximately 1.5 million garbage trucks. It will take years for them to be written off completely. They may be fit with an e-lifter to replace the hydraulic one though.
Part of the existing fleet will first switch to other fuels such as methane (CNG) because that adjustment is still much cheaper than buying a new electric vehicle, while also a step in the right environmentally friendly direction.
RCV Truck builders have invested heavily into production lines to produce diesel-powered trucks and hydraulic bin lifters. The transition to new production methods & supply chains takes time.
The initial purchasing price of an E-vehicle is still much higher than a vehicle with a combustion motor, although the difference during a 7 year life span diminishes.

Future

The ever growing demand for clean and environmentally friendly equipment drives the growth of new electric options. Our reseach also found that the Covid-19 pandemic accellerates the development of new E-solutions for the Waste Industry. We see new innovative companies entering the competitive landscape while established suppliers also develop new solutions. Some examples from the industry:

Geesing-Norba in cooperation with Bluekens Trucks have developed a fully electric RCV. It is too pricey right now but it will become more competitive in a few years, especially when taxation and penalties on carbon emissions increase.
Terberg-Rosroca developed the E-collect vehicle which is a fully electric RCV and can do an excellent job on many waste collection routes.
BAS E-LIFTERS offers a new state-of-the-art 100% electric bin lifter, while Faun-Zöller offers a hybrid lifter (hydraulic lifter powered by truck battery).
ZF Aftermarket, Horiba, and others offer smart retro-fits to replace fuel powered drive trains with electric ones.

One thing is certain: The Waste Collection Industry is electrifying! This is a good thing, as it contributes to a more sustainable and emission-free world.
